(Tolo News) – Afghan security forces will maintain the security of NGOs, the embassies and the political representatives after private security firms are banned, Ministry of Interior said

The Afghan Minister of Interior, Bismillah Mohammadi, said a decision about those private security companies working for the development and reconstruction projects will be made within three months.

A joint group has been established in cooperation with the international community to move ahead with this plan, Mr Mohammadi said.

He said it will be decided in the next three months either to disband or to allow those private security companies maintaining the security of reconstruction and development projects to continue with their work.

“A joint group led by the Ministry of Interior has been established to make a decision about those private security companies which are active in the reconstruction and the economic-social development projects, the Interior Minister, Bismillah Mohammadi, said.

“The group in cooperation with the international community, will propose a date for the ban of these companies to President Hamid Karzai by next month,” he said.

After the disbanding of private security companies, Afghan forces will maintain the security of Non-Government Organisations (NGOs), the embassies and foreign diplomats, he added.

On the other hand, the United States ambassador to Kabul, Karl Eikenberry, said Washington, Nato and the United Nations support the Afghan government’s decision.

“Why should private security companies do this kind of work when the Afghan national police have to be developed, when the Afghan national army has more requirements. And so I tell you as the ambassador personally with my experience in your country full support and our government has a support for the decree,” he said.

The Afghan Ministry of Interior has so far disbanded 26 private security firms that were without licences.
