President Ghani seeks re-election in 2019 presidential elections

The Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has confirmed that he is seeking re-election during the presidential elections scheduled for 2019.

He revealed his intention to run in presidential elections during an interview with Bloomberg.

President Ghani has said he seeks re-election in a bid to finish the works which were launched during his tenure, including ongoing peace efforts aimed at ending the 17-year war that has claimed that the lives of tens of thousands of people.

He said democratic stability was his priority. “The elections must produce a leader with a mandate to move Afghanistan forward, put an end to the inherited crises of the last 39 years,” President Ghan told Bloomberg.

This comes as around six months are left for the presidential elections.

The Independent Election Commission of Afghanistan (IEC) has set the April 20th as the date for the presidential elections.

The election officials had earlier said the presidential elections would be organized on 31st of Hamal equivalent to April 20th of 2019 has been set as the date for the presidential elections.
