President Ghani appoints new security ministers, aimed at improving conditions

National Security Council in a released statement said that President Ashraf Ghani appointed Chief of Army Staff Gen. Yasin Zia as an acting Defense minister, Helmand Governor Hayatullah Hayat as acting Minister of Interior, and Gen Ayun Salangi as deputy Minister of Interior affairs.

Interior Minister Gen. Massoud Andarabi is replaced by Hayatullah Hayat who was serving as the governor for Helmand province.

Andarabi was appointed to the lead the Ministry of Interior in December of 2015.

Gen. Ayub Salangi, former deputy head of Independent Directorate of Local Governance is appointed as the Deputy Minister of Interior affairs.

The statement also added that replacements in the Ministry of Interior are decided to improve the security conditions in the country.

It is also expected that these changes will refine reforms in the Ministry of Interior affairs.

National Security Council also indicated that Gen. Yasin Zia will be the acting Defense Minister, while also be serving as Chief of Army staff until the return of Defense Minister Assadullah Khalid who currently is under treatment for having an unwell health condition.

The necessary reforms for a better security situation are aimed at enhancing the protection of the people and are part of the proper implementation of the 2024 self-reliance plan, the statements read.
