Powerful earthquakes in China leaves at least 47 dead

Dingxi city earthquakeAt least 47 people were killed and nearly 300 others were injured following two powerful earthquakes which struck Gansu province in northern China, the officials said.

According to US Geological Survey the first earthquake near Dingxi city had a magnitude of 5.98 and was shallow, with a depth of just 9.8 km (6 miles).

Another earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 hit the same area just over an hour later, which triggered a series of mudslides and landslides, state-run news agency Xinhua reported.

The source further added that the Gansu military police have deployed 500 soldiers, including 120 specialist rescuers, while 500 emergency tents and 2,000 quilts are also being transported to affected areas.

The Chinese president Xi Jinpingand Prime Minister Li Keqiang insisted on the importance of the rescue operations being conducted well, and called on Gansu province to express concerns for the victims.

According to theDingxi government, the earthquake has caused a direct economic loss of 198 million yuan ($32m; £21m), the Dingxi government said.

This comes as an earthquake in Sichuan province left up to 90,000 people dead and millions homeless in 2008.
