Powerful 6.4-magnitude earthquake strikes Afghanistan

A massive earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 struck Afghanistan and its neighbouring countries on Thursday at 1:40 pm local time.

The earthquake’s epicentre was located in Jurm, a region within Afghanistan’s Badakhshan province, as reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The tremors from the earthquake were felt not only in Kabul but also in other Afghan cities. Additionally, parts of Pakistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan experienced the quake’s effects.

At this time, there is no available information regarding any casualties or damage caused by the earthquake.

Afghanistan is a country prone to various natural disasters, including earthquakes, landslides, droughts, avalanches, and flooding.

The recent earthquake in Herat had a devastating impact, affecting thousands of people across the country, and highlighting the ongoing vulnerability to such disasters in Afghanistan.

According to the World Health Organization’s assessment, the recent earthquake has resulted in an estimated 1,482 fatalities and 2,100 injuries.

Furthermore, the earthquake has had a widespread impact, affecting approximately 43,400 individuals and leaving 114,000 people in need of humanitarian assistance.
