KABUL, Afghanistan – The leadership committee of the High Council of National Reconciliation (HCNR) will hold its first meeting at the Presidential Palace Saturday, said Fraidoon Khwazoon, a spokesman for the reconciliation council.

This came a week after the EU Delegation and EU Heads of Mission based in Kabul urged for a “swift establishment and operationalization of the council as the body designated to provide “guidance” to the ongoing peace negotiations.

Sources on Wednesday said the council has included Sayed Eshaq Gailani, Farkhunda Zahra Naderi and Shahzada Massoud to the list of 45 members of the council.

Meanwhile, with a possibility Rahmatullah Nabil, former head of the National Directorate of Security; Ahmad Massoud, the son to Ahmad Shah Massoud; and Ahmad Wali Massoud, former Afghan ambassador to the UK, will be included in the list.

Abdullah Abdullah, the chairman of the High Council of National Reconciliation, is holding regular discussions with the Afghan political leaders about the agenda of the meeting on Saturday, sources said.

The meeting will be held amidst a breakthrough in the peace negotiations between the delegates of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and the Taliban in Doha.
