Pakistan, in a letter to the Taliban in Afghanistan, demanded the arrest of Maulana Masood Azhar, the leader of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), a Jihadist militant group based in Pakistan, hinting that he is in Afghanistan, Pakistani media reported.

According to Pakistani media reports, the Pakistani Ministry of Foreign Affairs has officially sent a correspondence to the Taliban government in Afghanistan, seeking the arrest of Masood Azhar.

Masood Azhar is allegedly hiding in Afghanistan, where the Pakistani government believes he is in the provinces of Kunar or Nangarhar, in eastern Afghanistan bordering Pakistan.

An arrest warrant was issued for Azhar by a Pakistani anti-terrorism court on grounds of raising funds and supporting a terrorist organization. Azhar is reportedly a UN-designated global terrorist.

JeM, an Islamist Jihadist militant group that seeks to separate Kashmir from India through the use of violence, was established in Karachi, Pakistan in 2000 by Maulana Masood Azhar.

India, meanwhile, asserts that Pakistan consistently uses Azhar, the leader of a Pakistan-based terrorist group for terrorism-related activities in Kashmir.

The Taliban, on the other hand, reject the claims of Massod Azhari seeking refuge, according to a press release on Wednesday. The Taliban “does not allow any armed oppositions in its territory to operate against any other country,” the statement reads.

This comes at a time when the Taliban government in Afghanistan has been viewed as posing a threat to turn the country into a sanctuary for terrorists, particularly in light of the killing of al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri, who was residing in Kabul, the Afghan capital.
