sharbat-gulaThe Pakistani authorities have reportedly halted the deportation of iconic Afghan woman Sharbat Gula as Afghanistan awaits to welcome her home after spending almost three decades in refuge.

The decision to halt Gula’s deportation was reportedly considered by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government following a plea by Pakistan Tehri-e-Insaf Chief Imran Khan.

Khan on Saturday urged Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Pervaiz Khattak not to deport Sharbat Gula, according to local media reports.

A provincial government spokesman said the federal government will be requested to grant Gula refugee status, emphasizing that the move would create a better image for the province.

The Afghan Ambassador to Pakistan Hazrat Omar Zakhilwal on Friday informed regarding the release of Gula from jail in Pakistan.

The latest move to block deportation of Gula comes as the Afghan nation and President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani were due to welcome her home on Monday.

“With utmost delight, I announce that Sharbat Gula is now free from the legal troubles she endured over the past couple of weeks.

She soon will also be free from an uncertain life of a refugee as she will be on her way back to her own country as soon as next Monday where she still is a beloved image and a national icon,” the Afghan Ambassador said Friday.

Zakhilwal further added that Gula will be met by President Ashraf Ghani upon her arrival to welcome her back home and help her with her resettlement.

Gula gained global recognition when her photograph was featured on National Geographic Magazine’s cover in 1985 and was linked with Leonardo Da Vinci’s Mona.

She was residing together with her sons in Nasir Bagh camp established for Afghan refugees since she moved to Peshawar in 1984.
