Pakistan condemns deadly attack targeting Afghan Sikhs in Jalalabad

Pakistan has condemned a deadly attack targeting a group of Sikh nationals of Afghanistan in Jalalabad city, the provincial capital of Nangarhar province.

“We are distressed and grieved at the loss of precious human lives. We express our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of those who have lost their lives and pray for early recovery of the injured,” a spokesman for the foreign ministry of Pakistan Dr. Mohammad Faisal said.

The provincial government media office said the incident took place at around 4pm local time in Malang Jan square on Sunday after a suicide bomber detonated his explosives, leaving at least 19 dead.

The statement further added that at least seventeen Hindu and Sikh nationals of Afghanistan were killed in the attack and at least 21 others including seven Sikh nationals were wounded.

The provincial public health directorate said the Hindu candidate for the upcoming parliamentary elections Avtar singh was also among those killed.

According to the local officials, the health condition of a number of those wounded in the attack is critical and there fears that the death toll could further rise.
