20 soldiers have been killed and 16 others wounded in a militant attack in northeastern India.

According to local media reports rebels had established an ambush for Army personnel in Chandel District of Manipur state this morning.

Police say 6 Dogra Army convoy was heading from towards Imphal, capital of Manipur state when it came under attack at around 08:30 am this morning.

Three of those wounded are announced to be in critical condition.

Sources have told local media that there were about 50 gunmen armed with heavy and light weapons and explosive devices who launched the attack on military convoy. Sources have added that the insurgents later set the military vehicles ablaze.

Indian premier Narendra Modi has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives.

“Today’s mindless attack in Manipur is very distressing. I bow to each and every soldier who has sacrificed his life for the Nation.” Narendra Modi tweeted after the attack.

No group has immediately claimed responsibility for the attack but India’s NDTV news reports that security agencies suspect Naga group NSCN(K) or the United National Liberation Front of Manipur, or UNLF.

India’s Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar said those behind the attack will be brought to justice.

“Those who committed the cowardly act will be brought to book,” he is quoted by NDTV as saying.
