US muscle flexing

On 6 January 2020, Major General Qasem Soleimani And PMF leader Al Maghribi were killed along with other people in a US airstrike at the Baghdad International Airport. The assassination of these people led to a wave of outcry among the entire world, with many people and political commentators saying that the United States had triggered the potential risk of not only a dangerous competition and conflict escalation with Iran that might eventually snowball into a great war with the involvement of global powers like China and Russia but also President Trump had dented the image of the United States throughout the world and compromised with US national security. President Trump’s and his administration’s s logic behind the killing of  Major General Soleimani was simple- he was the leader of the Quids force of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, which was a Specially Designated Terrorist Organisation (SDTO) by NATO and its allies as well as a few other nations.  In fact, President Trump said that the US had not great military personnel, but they rather had killed a terrorist, who was wrecking havoc in the Middle East with his extremist policies and working directly and reporting to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s  Supreme Leader.

In fact, if we look at the history of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps(IRGC), we will find out that the IRGC was formed in 1979 soon after the Islamic revolution in the same year under the guidance of the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini and like many, Soleimani had joined IRGC in 1979. He was born in a poor family and later when he grew up, he became a military contractor and consultant. He was very patriotic and interested in physical exercise. He often used to go to build his body and always desired to be something great in life. In 1979, he joined the IRGC and began to rise through the ranks gradually. Due to his role in several battle victories in the Iran-Iraq War of 1988, which lasted for eight years, but the status quo continued, heavy losses of life, along with the bombing of the two capital cities of the two countries, that is Teheran and Baghdad by each other’s militaries happened. But Soleimani had a lot to gain from the war and his spectacular successes enabled him to get very close to Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini’s successor, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and in  1998, he became the leader of the Quids force of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Iran: US’ nemesis

After the ouster of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi of Iran and the installation of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini as the supreme leader of Iran in the aftermath of the Iranian Revolution(1979) and gradually with the establishment in Iran of an Islamic Republic,  for almost 2 years the staff of the US Embassy in Teheran were held hostage by the Iranian forces. US- Iran Relations deteriorated and Iran started wooing US opponents like China, USSR, Libya, Egypt and other countries but became antagonistic towards US  allies in the region like Saudi Arabia, Israel, Lebanon and Jordan. IRGC  directly reported to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and had no accountability to the public. IRGC was given commands by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to operate outside Iran territory. Iran called the United States ‘the great Satan’ and sought to become the leader of Muslim nations of the world. It never agreed with the Saudi Arabian decision to allow the United States to develop so many military bases over there and throughout the Middle East and wondered that how could the King of Saudi Arabia which was the custodian of the Mecca and Madina give shelter and patronage to the United States and gradually force many other plant three states to do the same and develop relations with the US. Iran also began to develop a relationship with Pakistan, China and Russia when it gradually felt that it was being rejected by the United States.

Iranian  retaliation

Despite becoming close to Pakistan and China, Iran maintained good relations with India. Recently the Iranian Ambassador to India had said that Iran would welcome any mediation by India between the Iranians and the Americans. He mentioned that how Iran valued its strategic partnership and centuries-old relations with India in all respects highlighting the shared culture and civilization that bound us together. He also added that India was a very special friend of Iran and Iran was also one of India’s close partners and friends in the region and any mediation by Indians would be welcome by them.

Undeniably, Iran had a negative and spiteful role against Israel, United States, Saudi Arabia and their allies in this region. In fact, Former President of Iran, His Excellency Mohammed Ahmedinejad once remarked that Israel must be wiped off the map of the world. Relations between Iran and US and its allies have deteriorated to such an extent that we have witnessed rapid conflict escalation and extreme endangerment of the peace in the Middle East and totally destabilization of the region.
