Locals have evacuated the surrounding homes out of concern after a crack extending more than a kilometer appeared in the agricultural fields of the Ghazni province in central Afghanistan, according to local sources.

Sources claim that on Friday night, July 29, a large fissure formed in some of the agricultural lands in the Deh Yak district of the province of Ghazni.

The paucity of water, according to sources, is to cause of the situation that has been reported in the province of Ghazni.

The crack has a depth that has alarmed the surrounding residents, who were compelled to abandon their homes out of panic.

The excessive use of underground water in the fields, according to agricultural affairs experts, is what caused the ground to crack in this area.

They further warned that they foresee more problems if the practice persists.

Agriculture is the primary sector of the economy of Afghanistan, hence irrigation is crucial.

Through the usage of Karezes (horizontal wells), groundwater has traditionally been generated and utilized for irrigation purposes.

According to a USAID report, merely 42% of Afghans have access to clean drinking water, and only 27% of those living in rural areas have access to sanitation facilities.

As a result, the diarrheal disease kills an estimated 85,000 Afghan children under the age of five each year.
