At least one individual died and another was injured in a bomb blast at a college in Imphal, the capital of Indian Northeastern state of Manipur, on Friday night according to officials.

Reuters reported that the improvised explosive device (IED) detonated within the campus premises of a college, specifically at the DM College campus in the city.

“The IED exploded in the campus of a college [DM College campus] in the city. One person died, and the other is being treated in the hospital,” according to one of the officials as cited by Reuters.

No organization has claimed responsibility for the bomb blast, as indicated by officials familiar with the situation.

The state of Manipur has been embroiled in intense clashes since May, primarily between the Meitei majority and the Kuki minority, centered around disputes over economic benefits and tribal quotas.

The conflict has led to a significant loss of life, with nearly 200 fatalities reported as a result of the ongoing tensions between the two communities.

Imphal, predominantly inhabited by the Meitei community, has witnessed multiple instances of violence since the outbreak of the conflict.

The bomb blast occurred within the office premises of the All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU), a prominent student organization, situated within the DM University campus in Imphal West district.

Following the explosion, both injured individuals were promptly transported to the hospital, although one tragically succumbed to their injuries, according to officials.

Adding to the turmoil, during the night, around 1 a.m. (1930 GMT), the office of the United Committee Manipur, a civil society group advocating for Meitei interests, was set ablaze, further exacerbating tensions in the region.
