Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi is due to travel to Tehran on Tuesday for talks with Iranian officials, as Oman and Iran continue consultations on regional security and the management of the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said the visit is aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation and continuing political consultations between the two countries, which share coastlines along the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, Iran’s Tasnim news agency reported on Monday.
During the visit, Albusaidi is expected to meet his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi and other senior Iranian officials. The discussions are expected to focus on bilateral ties, regional developments and efforts to promote peace and security in the region.
The visit comes as Tehran and Muscat have continued discussions over arrangements for managing the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping route through which a significant share of the world’s oil and gas supplies passes.
Oman has historically maintained close relations with Iran while also playing a diplomatic role in regional disputes. Its position has allowed Muscat to serve as a channel for dialogue between Iran and Western countries on sensitive regional and security issues.
The Omani foreign minister’s planned visit also follows a recent trip to Tehran by Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, adding to a series of high-level diplomatic contacts involving Iran and regional countries.
Neither side has publicly provided details of any specific agreement expected during Albusaidi’s visit.
