An elderly man, in his 80s allegedly committed suicide in the Nijrab district of Kapisa province in northeastern Afghanistan, using a hunting rifle, according to local Taliban security officials.

The spokesperson for the Taliban police chief office in Kapisa province, Abdul Fattah Fayez, stated that the accident took place at around 5 o’clock on Wednesday, October 26th, in the Ghaws valley of Nijrab district.

According to a Taliban official, the lifeless body of the elderly man is identified as 82-year-old Mohammad Naeem. Fayez claimed that the man who killed himself had a mental illness, which may have impaired his judgment and contributed to the accident.

While the suicide figures in Afghanistan are underrepresented and not comprehensively recorded, the suicide rate according to media reports have surged in Afghanistan for various possible reasons.

A child earlier committed suicide in the northern Afghan province of Faryab, proving that suicide does not discern the difference between adults and children in Afghanistan.

According to local sources, a 12-year-old boy hanged himself to death in the Gurziwan region of the Faryab province in northern Afghanistan after receiving a heavy rebuke from his father.

Afghanistan has seen a perplexing rise in suicides, especially in the northern provinces, as a result of family violence, poverty, and unemployment significantly affecting people’s lives and adding to mental stress.
