At least four Taliban militants including the group’s notorious leader were killed following an airstrike in eastern Laghman province.
According to local government officials, the airstrike was carried out by NATO-led coalition forces in Alingar district on Friday.
A security official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the dead Taliban leader was identified as Zarqawi who was killed following a NATO drone strike.
The official further added that Zarqawi was involved in major terrorist activities in Alingar and other districts of Laghman province.
He said Zarqawi was leading a group of 15 militants and Afghan national security forces have long been looking for his detention to restrict the group’s activities.
The Taliban militants group has not commented regarding the report so far.
Laghman is among the relatively volatile provinces in eastern Afghanistan where anti-government armed militant groups are actively operating in its various districts and often carry out insurgency activities.
