The acting provincial governor of northern Balkh province Ata Mohammad Noor has followed the First Vice President Gen. Abdul Rashid in leading military operations against the militant groups in northern parts of Afghanistan.
The operations were conducted in different parts of northern Balkh, Jawzjan and Sar-e-Pul provinces of Afghanistan, according to the provincial government media office.
The operations were jointly conducted by the Afghan National Police, National Directorate of Security (NDS), Afghan national Army, Afghan Police Special Operations Forces, Quick Reaction Forces and security personnel from the other departments.
Faizabad district in northern Jawzjan province was the starting point of the coordinated operations where various villages were cleared of the militants with the local officials saying the areas were mainly used to plan and coordinate attacks in Balkh province.
The operations were also launched in Chemtal district of northern Balkh province and certain parts of Sar-e-Pul province.
The operations led by Noor were launched almost two weeks after the First Vice President Gen. Abdul Rashid Dostum concluded a month long operation in northern Faryab province.
Speaking during a ceremony to mark the first day of Eid al-Fitr in Mazar-e-Sharif city two months ago, Noor informed regarding the launch of joint operations after reaching to an agreement with First Vice President Gen. Abdul Rashid Dostum and First Deputy CEO Haji Mohammad Mohaqiq.
The operations are launched amid deteriorating security situation in northern provinces of the country.
Gen. Dostum joined the Afghan security forces in the frontline in northern Faryab province earlier in the month of August.
He survived at least two assassination plots by the anti-government armed militant groups while he was leading counter-terrorism operations in Faryab.
The convoy of the First Vice President Gen. Abdul Rashid Dostum was ambushed by the Taliban in militants in Qaisar district of northern Faryab province late last month.
Another plot to assassinate Gen. Dostum was thwarted by the security forces and special security guards of the Vice President six days after the first attack.
At least three suicide bombers were arrested from the vicinity of Gen. Dostum’s residence in Qaisar district shortly before they manage to launch a coordinated attack.
