The White House officials on Tuesday announced that no decision regarding the number of US troops to remain in Afghanistan has been taken by President Barack.
White House spokesman Jay Carney said that President Barack Obama is nowhere near a decision on how many US to be stationed in Afghanistan beyond 2014, after all NATO combat troops leave the country.
He did not rule reports regarding the consideration of “zero option” to withdraw all US troops from Afghanistan, however he said that US presence in Afghanistan after 2014 will be negotiated with the Afghan government.
This comes as the leading US newspaper The New York Times reported that President Barack Obama is considering a “zero option” that would remove all US troops from Afghanistan by the end of 2014.
American and European officials revealed that Obama was considering the decision in a reflection of America’s growing frustration with Hamid Karzai’s government.
Relations between Afghan president Hamid Karzai and president Obama reportedly reached a new low last month following the establishment of Taliban political office in Qatar, which led to suspension of bilateral security agreement between Kabul and Washington.
