Nicaragua, one of the seven Central American countries, has appointed a non-resident ambassador to Afghanistan.

Local media in Nicaragua reported on Saturday, June 22, that Michael Campbell, the country’s ambassador to China, will take on an additional role from his office in Beijing.

El 19 Digital news network, citing Rosario Murillo, the Vice President of Nicaragua, reported, “We thank Afghanistan, its people, its government, for the favor they have bestowed on our friend Michael Campbell.”

Michael Campbell was Nicaragua’s ambassador to China and Afghanistan.

Agence France-Presse also reported that Nicaragua has unexpectedly appointed an ambassador to the Taliban to enhance diplomatic relations with Afghanistan.

The Nicaraguan government has not provided an explanation in its statement regarding this decision, nor has it commented on officially recognizing the Taliban as the legitimate government in Afghanistan.

This marks the first instance of a country from the Americas appointing an ambassador to Afghanistan under Taliban rule.

Nicaragua is one of the seven countries in Central America.
