NATO soldier killed in militants attack on ISAF base in Kandahar

NATO and Afghan soldierA NATO soldier was killed following a coordinated suicide attack in southern Kandahar province of Afghanistan on Monday.

The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) confirmed that an ISAF soldier was killed following militants attack on an ISAF base in soutehrn Afghanistan.

ISAF in an email statement said, the militants launched a complex attack with a suicide vehicle-borne improvised explosive device on the military base, with enemy forces equipped with suicide vests and small arms fire.

“Operational reports state there was moderate damage to the outer perimeter of the base; however, the base is currently secured and all enemy forces were killed as a result of the attack,” ISAF said in its statement.

The statement did not disclose furhter information regarding the nationality of the deceased soldier.

In the meantime, local officials in southern Kandahar province of Afghanistan, said the attack was carried out by a group of nine militants.

The provincial government media office following a statement said all the eight militants in ISAF forces uniform, were looking to enter the military compound, but were shot dead by security forces.

The statement confirmed that a NATO soldier was killed following the incident, but the Afghan security forces and civilians did not suffer any casualties.
