Afghan President Hamid Karzai Attends Three way Summit in IranAccording to reports Afghan president Hamid Karzai has said that  Taliban leader Mullah Mohammad Omar could run for president in elections next year.

This comes as Karzai earlier this week visited Qatar to discuss Afghan peace talks and establishment of the Taliban liaison office.

Karzai has reportedly agreed with the Qatar officials to open the Taliban liaison office if Taliban group renounce violence and breaks all its ties with the al Qaeda.

While speaking during an exclusive interview with the Germany’s daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung, president Karzai said, that authorities have “sporadic contacts” with the Taliban.

Karzai also added that the Afghan constitution is valid for all Afghans and “the Taliban also should benefit from it.”

In response to a question regarding Mullah Omer’s participation in upcoming presidential election, Karzai said, “He can become a candidate for the presidency and give Afghans the opportunity to vote for or against him.”
