Two children were killed and two others injured after an unexploded mortar shell exploded in the eastern Afghan province of Paktika, said local Taliban officials.

A mortar shell struck the Zazi district of Paktia province on Saturday, October 22, killing two children and injuring two others, according to Omar Badri, the spokesperson of the Taliban police chief in Paktia.

The Taliban official stated that the incident took place after the children threw an unexploded mortar shell into the fire for fun while playing.

The injured, according to the Taliban official was transported to the Gardiz district hospital for medical treatment.

A young man was killed earlier last week in a mortar shell explosion in the southwest Afghan province of Farah, according to the Taliban-run media.

The incident’s victim was a 20-year-old man. This young man lived in the Khaja Khazar region, and the explosion happened at his residence, according to local sources.

Landmines, mortar rounds, unexploded ordnance, and other similar weapons have killed a large number of civilians in Afghanistan over the years, especially children.

Unexploded ordnance and other war remnants continue to take lives, particularly Afghan children, in addition the four decades of conflict in Afghanistan have resulted in a sizable number of fatalities, serious injuries, permanent disabilities and disfigurements, and even worse.
