Much of Afghanistan’s territory are littered by mines and explosives as a result of decades of war.

According to the Taliban’s Disaster Management State Minister, 606 square kilometers of Afghan land are contaminated with mines and explosives.

“Every month, landmines and explosive remnants of war kill or maim more than 120 Afghans,” said Nooruddin Rustamkhil of the State Ministry for Disaster Management and Humanitarian Affairs at an event commemorating the International Day for Mine Awareness and Mine Action.
