Militants killed six Pakistani soldiers in an exchange of fire in a northwestern tribal area bordering Afghanistan, the army reported Thursday.

The military stated three militants were also killed in the shootout but did not disclose any information.

The region was once a stronghold for Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), or the Pakistani Taliban, an outlawed outlet.

Since November last year, the group has increased its attack, mainly targeting security forces, including ordinary people.

In February, the TTP claimed responsibility for the deadliest attack on a mosque in Peshawar that killed more than 100 people.

The military has also recently conducted numerous operations on militant hideouts in the northwest, killing and detaining dozens of insurgents.

The incident happened a week after militants carried out several attacks, including when a suicide bomber drove into a military base camp just outside a rough, lawless tribal territory, killing three soldiers.
