A group of militants launched a coordinated attack on a security base in central Maidan Wardak province of Afghanistan earlier this morning.

According to the local government officials, the attack was carried out in Maidan Shahr city, the provincial capital of Maidan Wardak province.

Provincial governor’s spokesman Rahman Mangal also confirmed the incident but did not elaborate further regarding the possible casualties.

Security sources are saying at least 12 security personnel lost their lives in the attack and more than 20 others have sustained injuries.

The Taliban group claimed responsibility for the attack and said an armored personnel carrier packed with explosives was initially detonated and a group of insurgents intruded into the base.
