At least 29 people were killed, and 19 others were injured in the southern Mexico state of Oaxaca after a bus swerved its path and plunged into a ravine on Wednesday, according to officials.

According to Jesus Romero, the state interior minister, the bus crash occurred around 6:30 a.m. in the town of Magdalena Penasco, where it is thought the driver lost control of the vehicle while travelling from Mexico City to southern Oaxaca State.

According to officials, five more persons were evacuated to the state capital of Oaxaca City, while 14 more were hospitalized in the village of Tlaxiaco.

Six injured people were unconscious and in critical condition when taken to hospital.

Officials said that opening an investigation into the accident indicated preliminary information indicating a mechanical failure.

The deadly accident frequently occurs on narrow, steep roads in remote areas of Mexico.

Meanwhile, 18 people were killed in April this year, and dozens were injured when a bus toppled off a cliff in western Mexico.
