NIMRUZ, Afghanistan – A man stabbed his newlywed wife to death on his wedding night in Northern Province of Nimruz, local authorities confirmed Thursday.
Roqaya, 20, is killed over family dispute, official explained. The suspected husband is arrested and now is under investigation.
“The incident took place inside their living room at around 1am local time,” said Sher Hassan Sherzad, director of Anti Criminal Nimruz field office. “They had family problems and we detained the suspect.”
At least 42 stab wounds are seen on victim’s body, according to the local hospital.
“The woman is 20-year-old and has been brutally killed, leaving her at least 42 marks,” said a local doctor Yasmin Habibi.
The Nimruz Department of Women’s Affair and a number of women’s rights activist are calling for justice, as they urge the government to investigate the case thoroughly.
“This woman is unfortunately killed by her husband,” said Head of the Women’s Rights Malalay Ahmadi in Nimruz. “The husband is arrested and is under investigation.”
Meanwhile, a women rights activist Maliha Obaidy said violence in different form has drastically increased more recently, holding the respective department responsible for such crimes.
According to a statistic by Women’s Rights provincial office, at least three women has been killed by their kin in the past six months.
