Major offensive underway in Shirzad district after Friday’s twin truck bombings

A major offensive is underway in Shirzad district of Nangarhar province after a large-scale Taliban attack was repulsed on Friday.

The 201st Silab Corps of the Afghan Military in the East said at least 40 militants have been killed so far and 32 others have sustained injuries as a major clearance operation is underway in the district.

According to a statement released by 201st Silab, the operations are being conducted in various parts of the district with the support of artillery units and air forces.

The statement further added that the offensive was launched in response to a large scale attack by Taliban on Friday which claimed the lives of two security personnel and wounded eight others.

The Taliban militants launched the attack close to Shirzad district administrative compound shortly after announcing its spring offensive.

The Taliban militants launched coordinated attacks against the security forces after detonating two truck bombs close to district compound but the offensive was repulsed by the security forces.
