Shorab base HelmandThe largest NATO military base in southern Helmand province of Afghanistan will be transferred to Afghan national security forces control.

Provincial governor Muhammad Naeem said Wednesday that the agreement for the transfer of the military base was reached between Afghan government and coalition officials recently.

Naeem further added that the largest NATO base – Shorab Airfield, is located in Greshk district of Helmand province.

He said the transfer of the military base will pave the way for the launch of civilian flights in this province.

The transfer of the military base comes as the NATO-led Intenational Security Assistance Force (ISAF) are preparing to end the alliance’s combat mission in Afghanistan by the end of this year.

The transfer also takes place amid growing unstability in Helmand province where Taliban militants have recently launched major offensive in a number of its districts.

According to reports, heavy clashes have once again resumed in parts of Sangin district where Taliban had launched a major attack in the month of June that left dozens of people dead or injured.
