The Herat-Khawf railway will be officially opened and commissioned in the near future, the Presidential Palace said.
A statement from the Presidential Palace said that the opening of the third section of the Herat-Khawaf railway was attended by the Railway Administration, Public Protection Enterprise, Finance, and Industry; and a coordination meeting was held with the participation of representatives of the Ministries of Commerce and Foreign Affairs and the Governor of Herat.
The gathering was led by Ataullah Naseeb, Director of Investment at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Abdul Bari Siddiqui, deputy director of the Railways, said at the gathering that the railway track project is 225 kilometers long and has 4 sections — Iran-related affairs are funded by the Iranians and Afghanistan-related sections of the railway is financed by the Afghan government.
The project began 12 years ago in Afghanistan that acquired 497 acres of land, but due to some problems, the project was not completed. It is expected that the project will be officially launched in Herat province in the near future.
General Khushal Sadat, General Director of Public Protection Force said that full preparations have been made for the inauguration ceremony of the Khawaf railway project.
The opening ceremony will be reportedly attended by senior Iranian officials as well as President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani.
Afghanistan will benefit much from this project as, it will gain access to Turkey and Europe with Iran ports.
The Project is estimated to cost about $75 Million overall.
