Zalmay Khalilzad, US Special Envoy for Afghanistan reconciliation, returned to Kabul on Monday following his meeting with Taliban negotiators including Mullah Baradar in Qatar.

He has reportedly met with Afghan leaders and discussed recent developments in the peace process.

In a statement, the Presidential Palace said that Khalilzad discussed his recent trips to the regional, neighboring countries and Doha with President Ashraf Ghani.

The statement added that both the US special Envoy and President Ghani talked over the next steps in the Afghan peace process.

Khalilzad also met the Head of the High Council for National Reconciliation Abdullah Abdullah.

Abdullah tweeted that they had discussed the peace process, new initiatives, the latest political developments, and steps forward.

The Head of HCNR added that “we reiterated our call for a political settlement and acceleration of the peace efforts”.

Earlier US special Envoy met with Qatar’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammad bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani and the Taliban deputy leader Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar and other negotiators on Sunday evening.

Taliban spokesman, Mohammad Naeem tweeted following the meeting that “The implementation of the Doha agreement, the current situation of Afghanistan and the ongoing process of the Intra-Afghan negotiations”.

The recent visit of Khalilzad for the second time in two weeks to Kabul is aimed at growing efforts to get the Afghan Republic and the Taliban to reach a positive political settlement.

Meanwhile, Afghan ambassador to the United Arab Emirates Javid Ahmad said that Afghan peace talks should be rotated to other locations, Reuters reported.

He accused Qatari hosts of failing to push the Taliban hard enough to reduce the violence, he added that peace talks shouldn’t be held in one place and that the location needs to be changed to venues in Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and even Afghanistan itself.

He said that the Taliban were too comfortable in Qatar and they need to get out of their comfort zone.

The Two grand peace summits of Moscow and the UN-led peace meeting in Turkey are soon to be held, It is reported that the Moscow summit is scheduled for Thursday 18, March 2021.
