A group of protestors carrying separatist Khalistani flags and yelling pro-Khalistani slogans toppled the tricolour atop the Indian High Commission in London on Sunday night.

The protestors carried banners and Amritpal Singh posters while shouting slogans: We Want Justice, Release Amritpal Singh, and We Stand with Amritpal Singh were written on the posters that included Singh’s image.

The protest occurred when the Indian Police in Punjab launched an operation to arrest the Khalistani leader and his aide. Sources said the police detained him on Saturday near Jalandhar’s Nokodar, Punjab state of India, but the police have not confirmed it.

Late on Sunday night, India summoned a senior British diplomat to the Foreign Office. It demanded an explanation for the total lack of British security that had earlier in the day allowed separatist and extremist elements to enter the Indian High Commission and replace the Tricolor with the Khalistani flag.

India expressed its concern and told the second-highest ranking diplomat at the UK High Commission that the UK government’s “indifference” to the safety of Indian diplomatic premises and personnel in the country was “unacceptable”, said a statement by the Ministry of External Affairs.

The statement also said that the UK government was expected to take immediate steps to identify, arrest and prosecute each of those involved in the incident and put in place stringent measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.”

In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs said, “the UK Government was expected to take immediate steps to identify, arrest and prosecute each one of those involved in today’s incident, and put in place stringent measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.
