(Tolo News) – A senior official in election commission called on President Hamid Karzai to intervene to end troubles between election commission, Attorney General and special tribunal.

Head of Independent Election Commission Fazl Ahmad Manawi described special tribunal’s intervention in electoral affairs against the Afghan laws.

Only the President has the authority to suspend electoral personnel, because he has appointed them, Mr Manawi said.

The special tribunal has recently started the recount process of votes. The process is carried out by a commission comprised of officials from Interior Ministry, Supreme Court and Special Tribunal.

“I hope the tensions are resolved like those of parliament over Speaker election,” President Karzai’s spokesperson, Wahid Omar, said at a press conference on Monday.

Mr Manawi criticised the recent rush into IEC compound and described it as a raid on insurgent sanctuaries.

“I will defend democracy and the election until I’m in charge. I won’t let anybody to destroy an achievement,” said Mr Manawi.

He said he has sent several letters to Constitutional Implementation Commission seeking elaboration on whether formation of the special tribunal is legal or not, but IEC has not yet received any response.
