Karzai meets Pentagon chief, discuss bilateral issues

Karzai meets Chuck HagelAfghan president Hamid Karzai on Sunday evening met with the US secretary of defense Chuck Hagel in ARG presidential palace.

President Karzai and Pentagon chief Chuck Hagel discussed various issues during their meeting including US special forces operation and Afghan militia forces operating with the US troops, NATO troops pullout from Afghan villages, civilian casualties, bilateral security agreement between Kabul and Washington, US-run Bagram prison transfer to Afghanistan and Afghan peace process.

Karzai emphasized on mutual respect for the sovereignty of the two nations and said the issue must be respected in all bilateral relations between Kabul and Washington.

Hagel said the Afghan people has the right to be respected and United States of America respects the national sovereignty of Afghanistan.

During his meeting with the US defense secretary, president Karzai criticized the recent incident in southern Kandahar province of Afghanistan where a university student was illegally taken by Us troops and called it a breach of mutual respect for the national sovereignty of Afghanistan.

Karzai also insisted that the foreign troops must understand the sensitivies of the Afghan people, specifically in this regard.

Defense secretary Chuck Hagel also emphasized that United States respects the national sovereignty of Afghanistan and said mistakes have taken place in the past and the two nations shoudl take further steps to improve their bilateral relations considering the errors and experiences.

He also assured that United States remains committed to support the Afghan people and Afghanistan.
