Younus Qanooni appointed Afghan vice presidentAccording to reports, Afghan president Hamid Karzai has appointed Mohammad Younus Qanooni to succeeded late Marshal Qashim Fahim as his vice president.

Qanooni was appointed as vice president during a gathering in presidential palace on Tuesday, which was attended by a number of Mujahideen leaders and high level government officials.

He will be introduced to Afghan parliament in order to obtain confidence vote in the near future.

The decision to nominate Qanooni as successor of Marshal Fahim was taken during a gathering in late Marshal Fahim’s house on Monday which was attended by Jamiat-e-Islami and Mujahideen leaders.

Mohammad Younus Qanooni is one of the prominent members of Jamiat-e-Islami party of Afghanistan. He has served as interior minister in President Hamid Karzai’s government.

This comes as earlier reports suggested that Balkh governor Ata Mohammad Noor, defense minister Bismillah Mohammadi and Afghan high peace council chief Salahuddin Rabbani were proposed to succeeded the late vice president.
