Israel’s iconic leader Ariel Sharon dies after 8 years in coma

Ariel SharonIsraelis are beginning a short period of mourning as the nation’s most controversial and iconic leader and former prime minister Ariel Sharon died Saturday.

Sharon died of complications from a stroke at the age of 85. His death was snnounced by his son Gilad Sharon on Saturday afternoon.

Israeli and world figures including president Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, British prime minister David Cameron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel have paid tribute to a man who fought in four major wars before taking to the political stage.

However, the Palestinians, who loathed Sharon as their most bitter enemy, distributed candy, prayed for divine punishment and said they regretted he was never held accountable for his actions

He led Israeli troops against Arab armies in every war from independence in 1948 until his stroke 58 years later.

Sharon’s coffin will be transferred to the parliament building on Sunday where Knesset — Israeli Parliament — members and the public will have a chance to pay their respects.

Sharon died eight years after a debilitating stroke put him into a coma. He will be buried next to his wife after a private ceremony at their farm on Monday.
