ISAF finance Salang tunnel renovation

Salang Tunnel AfghanistanISAF pays for renovation of Salang tunnels which has been damaged during years of civil wars, official said.

Ahmad Shah Wahid, deputy Public Works Ministry said on Saturday that Salang tunnels will be renovated at cost of $ 11 million financed by ISAF.

Construction work has started a week ago. Traffic will be allowed during day time only while it will be blocked due to construction performance at night time.

Gen. Rajab, the highway maintenance chief said his team is prepared to face situations arising from the closure of the tunnel at night. He also added that passengers’ vehicles will be allowed to travel in daytime and heavy vehicles are scheduled on alternate days basis; one day from north and the other day from south.

The tunnel will be opened for the people visiting Mazar-e-Sharif for the New Year celebrations on March 21st.

Salang is one of the important high-ways connecting South and North provinces.
