Gen. CampbellThe NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) congratulates Afghanistan on successful conclusion of the presidential elections.

U.S. Army General John F. Campbell, Commander ISAF and U.S. Forces-Afghanistan, said “On behalf of the men and women of the International Security Assistance Force, I wish to congratulate President-Elect Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai, Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, and the people of Afghanistan in reaching this very important milestone.”

Gen. Campbell further added, “I would like to also congratulate the Afghan National Security Forces. Their achievements, through two elections and protracted political uncertainty, are enormous.

Their brave and heroic actions demonstrate their dedication to a secure, stable and unified Afghanistan. Without their efforts and sacrifice, the opportunity to conduct a peaceful political transition would not have been possible.”

He said, “We remain committed to assisting the Afghan National Security Forces as they continue to serve and secure the Afghan people.”

The Independent Election Commission (IEC) announced the final election results on Sunday evening, declaring Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai as President-elect of Afghanistan.

The announcement was made following conclusion of an agreement between Dr. Ashraf Ghani and Dr. Abdullah for the formation of a national unity government.
