Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has accused France of “blatant hypocrisy” over human rights and international law, citing its position on Israel’s military campaign in Gaza and the conflict with Iran.

Araqchi said on X on Thursday that France and its Western allies should stop “lecturing the world” on human rights, arguing that their support for Israel had undermined their moral credibility. His comments were reported by Al Jazeera.

He specifically accused France and its allies of supporting what he described as an Israeli “genocide” in Gaza and aggression against Iran.

The remarks come amid strained relations between Tehran and several European governments over the Iran conflict, human rights and the Strait of Hormuz, where shipping has been severely disrupted.

Iran has linked the reopening of Hormuz to broader demands involving the United States, while Washington has maintained restrictions on Iran-related shipping. Reuters reported that negotiations over arrangements for the strategic waterway have continued through mediators, but Tehran has said reopening the strait depends on the United States meeting additional conditions.

France has also been involved in European discussions over the security and reopening of Hormuz, while European governments have generally sought to avoid further escalation with Iran.

The dispute reflects a broader deterioration in Iran’s relations with France and other Western governments as the conflict, sanctions and disruption to one of the world’s most important energy routes continue to complicate diplomatic efforts.
