According to Iranian security officials a foreign surveillance drone was brought down by the Iranian security forces during a military exercise in the country’s southern region.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard spokesman for the military exercise Gen. Hamid Sarkheili said he Guard’s electronic warfare unit spotted signals indicating that foreign drones were trying to enter Iranian airspace.
Mr. Sarkheili further added the unmanned aircraft was brought down near the city of Sirjan after taking its control.
The general quoted by the official IRNA news agency said, “While probing signals in the area, we spotted foreign and enemy drones which attempted to enter the area of the war game. We were able to get one enemy drone to land.”
He did not disclose further information regarding the drone and to which country it belonged to.
This comes as Iranian Revolutionary Guard officials earlier in December claimed to capture an advanced RQ-170 Sentinel CIA spy drone and three ScanEagle aircrafts.
