Iran will formally be accepted as a member of the regional Shanghai Cooperation Organization, including China, Russia, and Central Asian countries, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Friday.

“At the meeting of heads of state on July 4, the full membership of Iran will be approved,” Lavrov said at the opening of an SCO centre in Moscow.

Iran has recently stepped up diplomatic efforts with allies and adversaries to lessen isolation, strengthen its economy, and project power.

India and Pakistan are two of the eight members of the SCO, a diplomatic alliance with its headquarters in China.

Lavrov said on Friday that the virtual summit the following week will “begin the procedure” for Belarus.’
