Iran hanged a man who was convicted by a revolutionary court of “waging war against God” in accordance with Sharia law, carrying out the first recorded execution in connection with the anti-government protests that have shaken the country.

The first protester known to have been put to death by Iranian authorities was the 23-year-old rapper Mohsen Shekari, who was convicted of blocking a street and attacking a pro-regime officer with a machete in September, domestic and international media reported.

The execution occurs at a time as other detainees could also receive the death penalty for their participation in the demonstrations, which started as a backlash against Iran’s morality police and have since grown into one of the most significant challenges to theocratic state since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

The Iranian Morality Police was dissolved in response to the widespread protests that broke out across the country on 16 September in the wake of the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish-Iranian woman.

Mohsen Shekari was the person who was put to death, according to the Tasnim news agency of Iran, but no more information was provided.

Shekari was found guilty, according to Iranian media, at Tehran’s Revolutionary Court, which generally hears cases behind closed doors and has previously drawn criticism internationally for denying defendants the right to choose their own attorneys or even access to the evidence against them.

One of the top executioners in the world is Iran. Usually, prisoners are hanged to death. Tehran continues to execute racial, religious, and sexual minorities as well as political dissidents. Reports claim that juvenile offenders are no exception to receiving capital punishment.
