The U.S. envoy for Afghan peace Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad has said the intra-Afghan negotiations will take place after U.S.-Taliban agreements.
Ambassador Khalilzad said in a Twitter post “Lot of chatter in Kabul about intra-Afghan negotiations. To clarify, those negotiations will occur after we conclude our own agreements and they will take place between the Taliban and an inclusive and effective national negotiating team consisting of senior government officials, key political party representatives, civil society and women.”
Ambassador Khalilzad is in Kabul as part of his latest trip to facilitate a peace in Afghanistan.
He met with President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani and other officials earlier this week.
The State Department said Ambassador Khalilzad will resume talks with Taliban in Qatar after concluding his trip in Afghanistan.
This comes as the seventh round of peace talks between U.S. and Taliban representatives end in Doha earlier this month.
