Militants launch deadly attack on Pakistan’s largest airport in Karachi

Karachi airportHeavy armed assailants launched coordinated attack on Pakistan’s largest commercial airport in Karachi late Sunday night.

The attack was reportedly carried out by eight to ten militants triggering intense gun battle with the Pakistani security forces.

All flight operations were suspended following the incident.

According to the local media agencies, at least 13 people including Pakistani security personnel were killed, while several others wiere injured following the attack.

Three aircrafts including a state airline plane, a private airline plane and another aircraft from another country were also damaged.

Pakistan Army troops were called in to deal with the situation as clashes continued for almost five hours.

Rao Muhammad Anwar, a senior police official, said the attackers were armed with automatic weapons and grenades and were exchanging gunfire with security guards.

ISPR Spokesman Asim Bajwa said all assailants including two suicide bombers were killed.

The Pakistani Taliban group – Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility behind the attack.
