Individual detained over Quran burning attempt in Kandahar

According to local authorities in southern Kandahar province, an individual was detained while he was trying to burn Holy Quran and graves in southern Kandahar city.

Provincial governor Dr. Toryalai Weesa on Friday told reporters, the detained individual had poured oil on Holy Quran pieces and wanted to torch them on Arab graves in this province.

Mr. Weesa further added, majority of the Arab militants were buried in this grave yard after they were killed during coalition air raid few years back.

He also said, the main motive behind the burning of Holy Quran on the graves of Arab militants was to pave the way for demonstrations similar as last week by creating sensitivity among the Afghans.

Provincial governor Dr. Toryalai Weesa said he had ordered the security institutions to follow up the issue more precisely and detain those involved behind the plot of burn Holy Quran books on Arab graves.

Afghanistan witnessed nation wide demonstrations after the reports of Holy Quran disposal and burning inside the Bagram air base was broadcasted.

Around 30 people were killed and dozens of others including Afghan and coalition security forces were injured during the demonstrations which turned into violence in a number of cities and provinces of Afghanistan.
