India’s former president APJ Abdul Kalam passes away

APJ Abdul Kalam diesThe former Indian President APJ Abdul Kalam passed away at the age of 83 on Monday evening, according to the official sources.

Dr. Kalam was the 11th President of India who was also known as the father of the country’s military missile programme.

Hospital sources confirmed his death this evening saying the former president collapsed and died at a hospital in Meghalaya where he had gone to deliver a lecture.

According to doctors in Bethany hospital, Dr. Kalam had suffered from a massive cardiac arrest. “President Kalam was brought to the hospital at 7 pm. When he brought in there was no sign of life. He was taken to ICU to try and revive him, which was futile,” hospital sources told India’s NDTV.

The Press Trust of India reported that the government will declare a seven-day national mourning.

The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi paied a special tribute to Dr. Kalam, saying “My mind is filled with so many memories, so many interactions with him. Always marvelled at his intellect, learnt so much from him.”

Dr. Kalam served as India’s president from 2002 until 2007 was a scientist and science administrator for four decades before that, mainly at the state-run Defence Research and Development Organisation and the Indian Space Research Organisation.

He played a key organisational and technical role in India’s nuclear programme.
