Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar referred to Bilawal Bhutto Zardari as the “promoter, justifier, and spokesperson of a terrorism industry” in a statement to the media.

“Victims of terrorism do not sit together with its perpetrators to discuss terrorism,” Following a meeting of the foreign ministers of the SCO members in Goa, Mr Jaishankar made the statement.

“Bhutto Zardari came as Foreign Minister of an SCO member state; that’s part of multilateral diplomacy, and we don’t see anything more than that,” he said.

Jaishankar’s remarks came in response to the statement made by Bhutto Zardari at a meeting of SCO foreign Ministers and a following news conference.

Jaishankar said India would combat and delegitimize cross-border terrorism and call out Pakistan’s support. He continued by saying that Zardari’s attempts to tie the start of talks to the reinstatement of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status, declaring that the only topic for discussion would be Islamabad’s withdrawal of Pakistan from Kashmir.

Jiashankar’s remarks also came on a day when five troops of the Indian army lost their lives in the line of duty while participating in an operation to find terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch.

Mr Jaishankar called for unified action to combat terrorism at the SCO summit. He claimed that turning away from terrorism would harm the SCO.

“We must not allow anybody – individual or state – to hide behind non-state actors… While the world faced Covid and its consequences, the menace of terrorism continued unabated. Taking our eyes off this menace would be detrimental to our security interests,” Mr Jaishankar stated.
