India has welcomed the Taliban’s move to “return the properties and lands of Hindus and Sikhs in Afghanistan.”

According to a report by The Times of India on Friday, Ranjit Singh, a spokesperson for the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, stated, “If the Taliban have decided to return the properties and lands to citizens who belong to the Hindu and Sikh communities in Afghanistan, we see this as a positive development.”

The Indian media also reported that the Taliban has established a commission to “ensure the return of lands and properties of Sikhs and Hindus in Afghanistan” that were seized by some influential individuals in the previous government.

This comes as the Taliban administration in Qatar, under the political office of the Taliban, announced the formation of a commission within the Ministry of Justice to investigate the seized properties and injustices against the Sikh and Hindu communities of Afghanistan.

The Ministry of Justice issued a statement confirming the formation of a commission to address the issue of seized properties belonging to Hindus and Sikhs and to seek justice for the injustices suffered by the Sikh and Hindu communities in Afghanistan.

According to reports, this commission will conduct investigations into seized properties in various provinces and districts to ascertain whether the properties were falsely obtained or seized and to verify claims of theft.

This comes as, following the Taliban’s resurgence in Afghanistan in August 2021, a significant number of Afghan Sikh and Hindu citizens have fled the country and sought refuge in other countries.
