In a recent statement, Naseem Saddat, spokesman for the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB), announced that the ACB and India’s BCCI have agreed to host Afghanistan’s T20 and One-day series against Bangladesh at Shaheed Vijay Singh Pathik Stadium in Greater Noida and Green Park Stadium in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh.

Given the strong historical ties, India has played a pivotal role in the meteoric rise of the Afghanistan cricket team. The BCCI provided a ground for the Afghanistan cricket team in Noida in 2015, which became its home ground. The Afghanistan team also hosted a T20 series against Bangladesh in Dehradun, India.

Afghanistan’s phenomenal rise in international cricket in a very short period of time led to them becoming a test-playing nation in 2017. They played their historic first test match against India in Bangalore in 2018. Prime Minister Modi lauded the performance of Afghan players, especially Rashid Khan, mentioning his name in a monthly radio program.

Participation and impactful performances of Afghan players like Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi, and Mujeeb Ur Rahman in the Indian Premier League have helped them grow in stature, gain wide recognition, and secure contracts to play in other cricket leagues around the world. Their performances have also motivated young players in Afghanistan to emulate their role models, which is evident in talents like Ibrahim Zadran, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Azmatullah Omarzai, and Noor Ahmad in the current national team.

The Afghanistan cricket team performed exceedingly well in the 50-over cricket world in India last year, defeating former world champions England and Pakistan under the mentorship of former Indian cricketer Ajay Jadeja. Jadeja’s role was acknowledged and appreciated by the Afghan players. In the past, former Indian cricketers like Lalchand Rajput and Manoj Prabhakar have also coached the Afghanistan national team.

In 2019, Indian company Amul became the main sponsor of the Afghan national team. Other Indian companies like FanCode and TYKA were the official streaming partner of the Afghan Cricket Board and the official clothing partner, respectively.

India also built a cricket stadium in Kandahar in 2017, which is being used by young cricketers to hone their skills. India continues to support the Afghan cricket team, and the success of the Afghan team was celebrated by Indians with huge fanfare, as witnessed in the 50-over World Cup in 2023.

In recent matches, the Afghanistan national team achieved remarkable victories against New Zealand. Their consistent performance and strategic gameplay led to significant wins, showcasing their growth and potential on the global cricket stage.

These victories against New Zealand have not only boosted the morale of the Afghan players but also garnered praise from cricket fans and experts worldwide. The team’s success is a testament to their hard work, resilience, and the solid support system provided by their allies, particularly India.
