According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Aid (UNOCHA), Iceland provides ISK 40 million ($296,000) to the Afghanistan Humanitarian Fund.
On Tuesday, July 5th, UNOCHA tweeted its gratitude to Iceland for its donation of more than ISK 40 million to the Afghanistan Humanitarian Fund (AHF).
Iceland has generously provided ISK 95 million to the AHF since 2020 with its new commitment.
The Afghanistan Humanitarian Fund is one of the UN’s country-based pooled funds. In order to protect people and rescue lives during humanitarian disasters, UNOCHA coordinates the international emergency response.
Due to the economic crisis brought on by the Taliban’s return to power, the United Nations has continuously requested other countries and international organizations to provide humanitarian aid to the people of Afghanistan.
According to reports from the World Food Program, half of Afghanistan’s population is currently going hungry as a result of the Taliban gaining control of the country.
International assistance was severely curtailed once the Taliban were reinstated in Afghanistan, and the World Bank’s reconstruction budget was severely constrained.
Iceland’s contribution to the AHF comes as Germany pledged the contribution of €50 million to help the impoverished people of Afghanistan.
